Nothing screams Labor Day weekend like a ground beef patty on the backyard grill. But if you’re not into pretending you’re Chef McGrill, just head to one of the best burger joints in the country (if you’re lucky enough to live near one, that is). Using explicit ratings, its proprietary hotness score, visit popularity, and tip sentiment, location technology platform Foursquare has named the top 10 burger joints across America.
From St. Paul, Minnesota’s Casper’s and Runyon Nook’s (“The Lodge Burger is fantastic, but every burger on the menu is absolutely phenomenal,” says one tip) to Lawrence, Kansas’ The Burger Stand at the Casbah (“Taste explosion in my mouth”), and whether you’re jonesing for a sloppy BBQ, diner-style classic or even a veggie burger, you’ll find a new favorite spot that’s worthy of a road trip.
10. Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint, Harrisonburg, VA
Jack Brown’s offers customers what they really, really want — burgers and beer. Win-win. Their burgers are 100 percent all-natural Wagyu beef, prepared “simple and classic” (so don’t ask for lettuce or tomato). But if you want to get fancy, they have creative burgers, too. Check out “The Chiflet,” an Applewood smoked bacon, egg and cheese burger (“I can’t stop ordering it because nothing [else] compares,” says one tip), and “The Elvis,” a burger topped with peanut butter, mayo, Applewood smoked bacon and cheese (“The Elvis is a thing of dreams”). For those who need to end a meal with dessert, try the crowd favorite deep-fried Oreo. Need we say more?
9. Worthy Burger, Royalton, VT
Is the Worthy Burger worth the drive to Royalton? Foursquare users think so. “Off the beaten path and worth driving there to discover,” says one tip. Worthy cooks all their burgers (100 percent grass-fed beef, since you asked) made to order over a hardwood fire. But don’t just order a burger — Foursquare users say a big basket of fries is a must. The Worthy fries are hand-cut and cooked in Wagyu beef tallow, and you can add parmesan and white truffle, melty cheese, or their “Legendary Crack Rub.” We’re on our way.
8. White Dog Black Cat Cafe, Green Bay, WI
Yes, White Dog Black Cat has burgers — and they are kind of crazy (in a good way). Take the “Hungry Cat,” for example. It’s a half-pound burger stuffed between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Or the “Drunken Pig,” a burger topped with pulled pork, beer cheese sauce, and onion rings. Drool. Foursquare users also rave about the cozy and hip vibe, and the must-try brunch selections, including the Al Pastor Eggs Benedict, an English muffin with grilled pineapple, Mexican pork, and poached eggs smothered in cilantro lime hollandaise.
7. Brownie’s Hamburger Stand, Tulsa, OK
Brownie’s is a Tulsa icon and one of the older burger joints in town, serving juicy burgers and root beers in frosty mugs since the 1950s. So make no mistake, they know burgers. Foursquare users love their double cheeseburgers (“Great classic burger,” says one tip). Get them with their famous onion strings, which get rave reviews from customers. But their homemade pies also deserve a shoutout. Now, all you have to decide is which slice of pie to get — coconut, butterscotch or good old chocolate?
6. Big Orange, Little Rock, AR
You won’t get a regular run of the mill burger here at Little Rock’s finest burger joint. Big Orange’s burgers feature must-try fancy fixings, like their house-made spicy pimento cheese or smashed avocado. Here, you get to choose your patty: all-natural beef burger, house-ground turkey burger or a three-bean and veggie burger — because vegetarians love a good burger, too. “I’m a big meat eater but trying to cut calories a bit, so ordered the classic burger with a veggie patty. Amazing. Can’t wait to come back and get another,” says one tip from a Foursquare user, who is probably on Team Vegetarian now. But our favorite tip sums it up: “Stop reading reviews and just eat here!”
5. Casper’s & Runyon’s Nook, St. Paul, MN
Have you ever had a stuffed burger? Well, get thee to Casper’s & Runyon’s Nook, stat. If you want to play it safe for starters, try the “Juicy Nookie,” a stuffed cheeseburger (“It is the best burger,” says one tip). But if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, go for “The Spanish Fly,” a chorizo burger, 50/50 blend of beef and Spanish-spiced pork filled with queso blanco, or “Guy’s Big Bite,” a Pepper Jack-stuffed burger topped with roast beef, shredded cheddar and bacon. We’ll give it a heart eyes emoji.
4. Shake Shack, New York, NY
No surprise, here. You gotta hit up a Shake Shack when you get the snack attack. Once you try the freshly ground secret Shack blend made from 100 percent Angus beef with that soft potato roll, you’ll never look back. “Damn straight-up delicious,” says one Foursquare tip. And because you need to wash down that juicy burger with something, Foursquare users recommend one of the deliciously creamy, hand-spun shakes: “Best combo of my life: single Shackburger + cheese fries + classic scooped shake! I can’t get over it!”
3. The Burger Stand at The Casbah, Lawrence, KS
Gourmet burgers? Yes, please. We want to try everything on the menu at Lawrence’s best burger joint. Should we try the Kobe, which is American Kobe beef with pickled red onions, truffle butter, tomato-aioli sauce and assorted seasonal greens? Foursquare users say hell yes. “Kobe burger, duck fat fries, boulevard wheat, with some Guinness mustard. Kills me every time,” says one tip. Or should we go for one of the vegetarian options, like the Garbo, which is a Garbanzo bean patty with sweet dill relish, citrus-garlic aioli, Vermont cheddar, tomato and assorted greens? “The Garbo and the black bean burger are the best,” says another tip. Sold.
2. In-N-Out Burger, Oceanside, CA
We’re in the home stretch — you didn’t think Foursquare users would forget about In-N-Out, did you? We have two words: “Double-Double.” It’s the crowd pleaser at this beloved burger joint, which has locations in California and Texas. It’s two 100 percent beef patties and two slices of American cheese all on a freshly baked, old-fashioned sponge dough bun. Yum-yum. But if you can’t do double duty, the rest of the menu also gets a thumbs-up from Foursquare users. “There are so many variations you can do, Google the secret menu,” says one tip.
1. Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Austin, TX
Ladies and gents, your top-rated burger joint is Hopdoddy Burger Bar, which has locations in five states, including Texas, California, and Tennessee, and an all-star burger lineup. Foursquare users can’t get enough of this burger bar’s offerings. “Trust me, you have never had a burger till you’ve been to Hopdoddy, “ says one tip. “The Magic Shroom is the best burger I’ve had in my life,” says another. “Generous Angus beef patty, mushrooms, melted goat cheese and basil pesto — what more can I ask for?” Maybe the Llano Poblano Burger? It brings the heat with Angus beef, Applewood smoked bacon, Pepper Jack, seared poblanos, chipotle aioli, lettuce, tomato, and onion. We want it all.
